Background of the Study:

International trade liberalization has reshaped economies by opening markets and fostering global competition. However, its impact on domestic cultural industries has been a subject of debate, particularly in culturally rich cities like Abuja. Trade liberalization exposes local cultural products to international markets, potentially challenging traditional practices and altering cultural landscapes (Okonkwo, 2023). This study evaluates how the opening of trade barriers influences domestic cultural industries in Abuja, exploring the balance between economic benefits and cultural preservation. It investigates the influx of foreign cultural content, market pressures on local producers, and the resulting shifts in cultural consumption patterns. The research examines policy measures aimed at protecting indigenous cultural industries while promoting global trade. By integrating economic analysis with cultural studies, the study provides a nuanced perspective on the tensions between globalization and cultural identity. It also considers the role of government policies, trade agreements, and international cultural exchanges in mediating these impacts (Chukwu, 2024). The findings are expected to offer insights into the complex dynamics at the intersection of trade liberalization and cultural sustainability, contributing to policy debates on cultural protection and economic development in Abuja.

Statement of the problem:

Despite the economic advantages of trade liberalization, its impact on domestic cultural industries in Abuja remains controversial. The rapid influx of foreign cultural products has led to concerns about cultural homogenization, market saturation, and the erosion of local cultural identities (Bello, 2023). The challenge lies in balancing the benefits of open trade with the need to protect and nurture indigenous cultural expressions. This study aims to address these challenges by critically evaluating the effects of trade liberalization on Abuja’s cultural industries and proposing measures to mitigate adverse impacts while leveraging economic opportunities.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the impact of trade liberalization on domestic cultural industries in Abuja.

To identify challenges faced by local cultural producers amid increased competition.

To propose policy recommendations for balancing trade benefits with cultural preservation.

Research questions:

How does trade liberalization affect local cultural industries in Abuja?

What challenges do local cultural producers face in a liberalized trade environment?

How can policy measures support cultural preservation while promoting trade?

Significance of the Study:

This study is significant as it explores the intersection of international trade and cultural sustainability, providing valuable insights for policymakers and cultural stakeholders in Abuja. The findings will contribute to strategies that protect domestic cultural industries while harnessing the economic benefits of globalization (Uche, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.
